Phrasal verbs juga digolongkan dari transitive dan intransitive, atau kata kerja yang memerlukan objek dan kata kerja yang tidak memerlukan objek. Kata kerja transitive adalah kata kerja yang memerlukan objek sebagai pelengkapnya. Kata kerja transitive tidaklah lengkap atau memiliki makna yang sempurna jika tidak diikuti oleh objek. Contohnya kata bring, yang artinya membawa. kata kerja bring memerlukan objek agar maknanya dapat dipahami. Sedangkan intransitive verbs adalah kata kerja yang tidak memerlukan objek.
